Western Artist Blair Wilson Wins Award By Kalen Summers
Of the Lamron
Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to introduce you to the winner of the Most Outstanding Art Student Award for this year's Student Excellence Week, Mr. Blair Wilson. Wilson, a studio art major graduating this spring, will be preparing a special exhibit especially for Student Excellence Week.
Blair likes to work with ink drawings, paint and print making. He has been seriously pursuing art since he was a sophomore in high school. He said he told himself, "Well, I could either be a plumber or do this." Since then his work has been seen in many shows and has won quite a number of awards.
Last year, in Blair's home town of Pendelton, he won a $50 jurors Award for an acrylic painting he entered. This is an annual show that often has 300 to 400 entries.
Blair came to Western with an art scholarship where he had won first place. He became very active in the art community at Western. He is the Vice-President of the Committee for the Exhibition of Visual Arts (CEVA) which is a club here on campus. They are responsible for all the galleries around campus. He personally takes care of hanging shows in Campbell Hall, the President's Gallery, the Fine Arts Gallery, and the Concourse Gallery.
He also coordinated, organized, executed and supervises an evening life drawing class. It was begun last term as a by-arrangement class but now has a course reference number and eight students enrolled.
Blair is heavily involved with Northwest Passage here at WOSC. The first year he was at Western he was featured in the campus publication, and for the last two years he has been the magazine's art director. He is proud of the fact that he has been able to double the amount of artists in Northwest Passage every year since he began. His work has been featured in two other similar publications.
Perhaps Blair's most noticeable contribution to other students has been his tie-dye workshops. They have been very successful, raising enough money to help send Blair and the rest of CEVA to San Francisco this week. He designed the advertising posters and was in charge of organizing the seminars. The fund raisers were very good for the club and because of that, and Blair, they are now in California "taking in the art scene." Look for Blair's upcoming showing, it will be worth your time.
